The Cancer Information Service (CIS)

The Cancer Information Service (CIS), a national information and education network, is a free public service of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the nation's primary agency for cancer research. The CIS telephone service provides confidential, personalized attention to each caller. CIS staff address cancer issues, including ways to prevent cancer, information on screening and early detection, diagnosis, current treatment options, and research studies and advances. The CIS provides referrals to cancer related community services such as Food and Drug Administration-certified mammography facilities and also distributes NCI materials to callers. No physician referrals.

Since the passage of the National Cancer Act in 1971, our nation has made great progress in reducing the burden of cancer. It was reported in February 2005 that cancer deaths in the United States have declined - for the first time since 1930, the year our country began compiling statistics on the disease's toll.
