Image of Special Transit

We envision a future where all people, regardless of age, health, disability, income or ethnicity or sexual orientation have easy access to the mobility options they need to enhance their independence and quality of life.

Special Transit's mission is to promote independence and self-sufficiency for people with limited mobility by providing caring, customer-focused transportation options.

Special Transit was established in 1979 as a private, nonprofit organization with initial funding from the Boulder County Commissioners to coordinate an efficient, cost-effective and accessible transportation system for seniors and people with disabilities residing in Boulder County. Since that time, Special Transit has grown from an annual budget of less than $50,000 to a multi-county, multi-program, multi-million dollar budget.

As a social entrepreneur, Special Transit operates three earned income contracts in order to generate revenue to support Special Transit’s mission-based paratransit and mobility options programs.

New facility gets started with a solid foundation

After the drilling and placement of 168 caissons during February and March, the first walls in Special Transit’s new facility were formed and then poured in late March. The walls for a stairwell in southwest corner of the building were the first to take a visible shape, followed by another stairwell and elevator shaft in the north end of the building.

Travel Training - The Easy Rider Program

The Easy Rider Program is a, comprehensive one-on-one travel training program, available in Boulder County, designed to teach older adults and people with disabilities how to safely and confidently use public transportation to expand independent travel options. Training techniques are adapted based on an individual's abilities and assist in overcoming any barriers to riding the bus.
