In the landmark paternity case of the decade, DNA Diagnostics Center's laboratory director, Dr. Michael Baird, announced the results of the paternity DNA test conducted between Anna Nicole Smith's daughter, Dannielynn, and Larry Birkhead. Millions around the world were tuned in to hear the announcement—that Birkhead is the father.
The announcement, made in front of the Bahamas court where custody proceedings were underway, marked the final chapter in a series of court battles over the custody of baby Dannielynn. The high-profile paternity test case first made its way to DDC in October 2006 with a court order from a California judge. Dr. Baird, considered one of the nation's leading experts in DNA testing, testified several times in subsequent court hearings from Florida to the Bahamas.
