The main causes of homelessness in the United States include the lack of affordable rental housing, increasing poverty rates, eroding employment opportunities, reduced access to health services (especially the treatment of diseases mental and addictive disorders), and decreased public assistance - now exacerbated by the rising costs of childcare, gas, food and electricity.
