Whether you’re interested in a specific issue or just want to contribute to your community, the City of Loveland offers many ways for residents to participate. From running for mayor to volunteering to coach a soccer team, there are opportunities for a wide range of interest, ability and energy levels.“Citizens play a very important role in city government,” said Renee Wheeler, assistant city manager. “Our City Council encourages participation and feedback.”Citizen participation is a building block in the foundation of Loveland’s city government.
In fact, Loveland’s Community Vision Statement includes the following: “Loveland is a community that encourages active public involvement and is responsive to the needs of its citizens.”People who serve on one of the City’s 26 boards and commissions advise their City Council directly on issues and policy in areas that include planning, communications technology, affordable housing and open lands.Residents step forward to serve on special committees looking at specific issues, projects or programs such as the Master Plan update, use of the old county fairgrounds site or the future of transit in Loveland.People also participate in their city government in many other ways. Volunteers provide clerical support, help with cultural events and shovel snow for their neighbors.Participation can involve a multi-year commitment or attendance at a one-evening meeting to share input on a particular project. It can be as simple as responding to a city survey.Public participation is a form of communication, say city officials.“By participating in programs that are provided by the City, residents are essentially voting on quality of life programs aimed at building a sense of community,” Wheeler said.
