Since the passage of the National Cancer Act in 1971, our nation has made great progress in reducing the burden of cancer. It was reported in February 2005 that cancer deaths in the United States have declined - for the first time since 1930, the year our country began compiling statistics on the disease's toll. The numbers were modest yet historic: 369 fewer people died from cancer in 2003 than in 2002.
Today's progress against cancer is the result of enhanced prevention strategies, along with earlier detection and better treatment - all made possible by years of dedicated intramural and extramural research.
While we have much more to learn about this complex disease, our increased understanding of cancer at the genetic, molecular, and cellular levels is opening up enormous opportunities to interrupt the initiation and development of the disease.
The National Cancer Institute's research programs are extensive and contain many innovative initiatives. I invite you to explore our Web site to find out more about the exciting work being conducted here at NCI and by NCI-supported scientists throughout the country.
You will also find valuable cancer-related information of all kinds. For the general public, patients, and health professionals, we offer consumer-oriented information on a wide range of topics as well as comprehensive descriptions of our research programs and clinical trials. Scientists will find detailed information on specific areas of research interest and funding opportunities.
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), one of eight agencies that compose the Public Health Service (PHS) in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The NCI, established under the National Cancer Institute Act of 1937, is the Federal Government's principal agency for cancer research and training. The National Cancer Act of 1971 broadened the scope and responsibilities of the NCI and created the National Cancer Program. Over the years, legislative amendments have maintained the NCI authorities and responsibilities and added new information dissemination mandates as well as a requirement to assess the incorporation of state-of-the-art cancer treatments into clinical practice.
The NIH headquarters, known as "NIH campus" to the local community, are located in Bethesda, Maryland. Administrative and program operations facilities are also located in off-campus buildings in the surrounding area. Here is a list of NIH facilities, both headquarters and off-campus. You can search the list by location, type of service, facility manager, and image map.
NIH scientists conduct their research in laboratories located on the main campus, and in several field units across the country and abroad.
The Cancer Information Service (CIS)
The Cancer Information Service (CIS), a national information and education network, is a free public service of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the nation's primary agency for cancer research. The CIS telephone service provides confidential, personalized attention to each caller. CIS staff address cancer issues, including ways to prevent cancer, information on screening and early detection, diagnosis, current treatment options, and research studies and advances.
